L&T projects aim to STEM the tide in Tamil Nadu classrooms

Earlier this year, 25 kids from Chennai schools made it to the prestigious Dr A P J Abdul Kalam Satellite Launch Vehicle Mission 2023. This project brought together 5,000 schoolchildren from Classes VI to XII from all over India to learn about designing and developing 150 PICO satellites, which were launched by the sounding rocket on February 19, 2023, from a coastal hamlet near Chennai.

Cracking a major national programme like this one was a breakthrough for the 25 Chennai schoolchildren who were part of engineering major Larsen & Toubros engineering futures (EF)programme. For the company, it was validation that its back-to-school projects are in a class of their own.

The EF programme (launched in 2019) is one of two major CSR projects L&T has inTamil Nadu the other being Every Child A Scientist or ECAS (since 2020). The aim: To kindle scientific temper and critical thinking among students of government schools. Both programmes aim to bridge educational gaps by helping students use technology and work with cutting-edge TEACHING and Learning Resources. The EFprogramme integrates the four disciplines of STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) into a learning paradigm based on real-world applications. The ECAS program me helps children improve their academic scores and provides them opportunities to learn about the earth and atmospheric sciences, biology, Agriculture-notes-for-state-psc-exams”>Agriculture, Health and Nutrition, physics, chemistry.
So far, nearly 16,000 students from 50 schools in Nadu have been covered in the last threeand-a-half years. L&T officials say the aim is to ensure students do not get spooked by science and maths. The EF programme strives to ignite childrens innate creativity and curiosity. By offering experiential learning, complex concepts become more accessible and maths and science become less daunting, says Mabel Abraham, head-CSR, L&T. For the EF project, L&T has partnered with the NGO American India Foundation to cover Classes VI to VIII in government schools in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpet, and Tiruvallur districts.

TNAU gets design patent for airflow test rig

TheTamil Nadu Agricultural University(TNAU) has received a design patent for UAVdownwashAirflow test Rig from the office of the controller general of patents, designs and trademarks.

According to TNAU, use of drones or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for crop spraying against diseases, pests, and has increasingly become important in recent years. To measure the downwash airflow pattern generated by rotor propellers of UAV, a downwash airflowtestrig was designed and developed.

The rig is useful for investigating the parameters and distribution laws of downwash airflow velocity of UAV sprayers in outdoor conditions.

Plea to allot major part of Sterlites oxygen to south Tamil Nadu

Withoxygen availability in Maduraiand the southern region getting worse, hospitals and healthcare experts have demanded that the government take steps to provide a major portion of the lifesaving gas produced at the Sterlite plant to these districts.

The District Administration held talks with these liquid Oxygen refillers and asked them to adhere to the agreements signed with private hospitals and supply oxygen accordingly.

Key health indicators have slowed down in TN: Former health minister Dr C Vijayabaskar

Outcomes of key Health indicators such as maternal mortality rate and fertility rate have slowed down inTamil Naduand the state was also no longer a top performer in organ transplant, former health minister Dr C Vijayabaskar said.

There were 54 maternal deaths for every one lakh live births in Nadu between 2018 and 2020 as per the special bulletin on maternal mortality rate of the sample registration system (SRS), he said. Although there was a dip compared to the 58 deaths during 2017-2019, the mere four-point difference pushed Tamil Nadu to the fifth slot compared to the third slot it held since 2010.

Tamil Nadu, which had one of the best performers in organ transplant and donation has dropped behind Telangana and Maharashtra in the last two years, he said.

T.N. Neutrino Observatory-Recent Developments

Nadu has told The Supreme Court that it does not want the Indian Neutrino Observatory (INO) to be built in a vulnerable ecological zone in the Western Ghats, at the cost of wildlife and Biodiversity, along with local opposition and public outcry against the project.

The proposal for the observatory, according to the Tamil Nadu government, would create permanent damage to the Western Ghats.

In June 2021, the Chief Minister met with the Prime Minister and requested that the project not be implemented. In September 2021 a delegation led by Member of Parliament T.R. Balu met with the Ministers of Industries and Forests to communicate the States opposition to the proposal.

According to the State, this corridor connects the Periyar Tiger Reserve on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border and the Mathikettan Shola National Park.

The project area also has ecological ties to the Srivilliputhur Meghamalai Tiger Reserve, which is located in the eastern habitats. It is Home to tigers from the area, which assists in a genetic spread. The tigers movement would be affected by even the smallest disturbance. The area is also a significant watershed and catchment zone for the rivers Sambhal and Kottakudi.

Though the experiments in the observatory would be done a kilometer underground excavations, transporting, and tunneling would jeopardize the zones ecology.

So, going through with the implementation of the project will cause harm to this area.

The India Neutrino Observatory (INO) is a particle physics research project being constructed in Theni, Tamil Nadu, to study atmospheric neutrinos. This project is noteworthy because it is expected to give exact measurements of neutrino mixing parameters. The project has a multi-institutional PARTNERSHIP and is one of Indias most significant experimental particle physics programmes.

If and when this project will be completed, the worlds largest magnet will be used in the magnetized iron calorimeter experiment, which will be four times larger than the 12,500-tonne magnet used in the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.
