Gujarat has second highest number of street children

According to figures provided by the Union Government,Gujarathas the second highest number of children who live on the streets.

Data provided by the Union ministry of Women and child development shows that 1,990 children live on the streets in Gujarat, second only to Maharashtra, where 5,153 children live on the streets.

Those working in the field of child rights say the actual number of such children could be higher, although the number of children on the streets keeps fluctuating.

Bhat clarified that there is a difference between “children living on the streets” and “street children”. “Those living on the streets go back to their homes during the night hours, while street children are those who live on the streets of one particular area. These are predominantly those who live without family members,” Bhat said.

New waste to energy policy in offing

With the earlier policy of the State Government having fallen well short in terms of delivering desired results, theGujaratgovernment is giving finishing touches to a newWTEpolicy to promote generation of energy from waste. The new policy is likely to be launched ahead of theVibrant Gujarat Global Summit, which is expected to be held in April.
The state government had announced the earlier policy in 2016 to reduce pollution caused by untreated solid waste. The earlier policy, which had envisaged generation of 100 megawatt (MW) of energy from waste, fell grossly short of expectation with a power generation of less than 5MW.

Under the earlier policy, a total of nine projects were given sanction. Of this, one has become operational inJamnagardistrict. Three other projects are under construction and halfway complete. In the remaining projects, even basic construction work has not begun.

Set up RT-PCR facilities in smaller centres: Gujarat HC

Taking into account the uncertainity of how long Covid-19 pandemic is likely to last, the Gujarat on Thursday asked the State Government to ramp up testing and create permanent RT-PCR testing and CT scanfacilitiesin smaller districts in the coming days.
The court has also sought a report on Covid testing that is going on at present across the state. The judges insisted that the government should promote entrepreneurs by extending loans to establish laboratories with RT-PCR testing facilities, which require nearly Rs 25 lakh to Rs 30 lakh.

While thAMCs drive-through testing initiative, the judges said that they were more concerned with testing facilities available for common man at the grassroot level. They asked the government if the common mans five-day long wait for RT-PCR testing has been reduced. The government answered in the affirmative, but also submitted that the laboratories have been overwhelmed with the rush, and this also causes delay in declaring results.

The judges also pointed out that the government affidavit did not talk much about testing facilities in smaller districts. The Advocate General said that except Dangs, all districts have RT-PCR facility.

Advocate Amit Panchal countered this and submitted that six districts Dangs, Tapi, Narmada, Gir-Somnath, Mahisagar and Dwarka do not have this facility. Justice Bhargav Karia of the division bench pointed out that a major district like Anand also did not have this facility, and people come to Ahmedabad for testing. The government said that there are two facilities in Anand district including one facility for TrueNat system.

Gujarat govt clears major hurdles for redevelopment

A major hurdle in the path ofredevelopmentof old societies registered under theGujarat Co-operative Acthas been removed. A simple office order to all district registrars of co-operatives has been issued by the state to allow redevelopment projects under the amended Act.

Though the existing amendment to theGujaratOwnership Flats Act (1972) was made in September 2018, it was in December 2019 that the urban development department clearly stated that the redevelopment clause also applies to housing societies governed by Gujarat Cooperatives Act. However, since there was no office order from the Co-operatives department, many district registrars were reluctant to accept redevelopment proposals from cooperative housing societies.

Crocodiles Relocated From Panchmuli Lake – Gujarat

In closing two days, 194 crocodiles have been relocated from Panchmuli lake near Statue of Unity in Narmada district, Gujarat.

Background:

This lake is also recognised as Dyke-3 of Sardar Sarovar Dam. It was developed for travellers travelling to the Statue of Unity. Lake is located about 5 km away from the Statue of Unity. It presents a clear view of the Vindhyachal mountain range and Sardar Sarovar Dam.

Gujarat firm launches first remote sensing satellite

In a boost to the Indian space startup , Gujarat-based aerospace firmAzista BST Aerospacelaunched its maiden satellite, Azista BST AerospaceFirst Runner(AFR), also called ABA First Runner.

The satellite was launched as part of the Elon Musk-led SpaceX Transporter-8 mission, atop a Falcon 9 rocket, from Space Launch Complex 4E,Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, at 2.49 am (IST). Azista BST Aerospace is an Indo-German satellite manufacturing joint venture floated by India’s Azista Industries Pvt. Ltd (70% stake) and Berlin Space Technologies GmbH (30% stake).

AFR is equipped with an optical remote sensing payload with both panchromatic and multispectral imaging capabilities.
