Sunderlal Bahuguna inspired Goans to preserve Western Ghats

The iconic environmental activistSunderlal Bahuguna, who initiated theChipko movementto protect the green cover of the Himalayas, wantedGoansto strive for the conservation of the Western Ghats.

He first visited Goa in 1983 to attend the Paryavaran Chetana Saptah. He toured various places in Ponda, Salcete and Bicholim urging the youths to work unitedly to protect the Western Ghats forests, from where most of the regions rivers originate.

Bahuguna visited Goa again in 1986, where all the members of the save Western Ghats movement converged at Bandora. In his speech, he deliberated on a strategy to protect the Western Ghats for posterity.

Goa Investment Promotion Board clears 6 projects, to bring in Rs 310 crore investment, 2,450 jobs

TheGoa Promotion Board(IPB) headed by CM Pramod Sawant met on Tuesday and cleared six projects, including the proposal for a Mini India theme park in Pernem. “We cleared six projects with investment of Rs 310 crore and EMPLOYMENT potential of 2,450,” said industries minister Mauvin Godinho.

IPB gave Pune-based real estate firm Bramhacorp Theme Park LLP the nod to set up the Mini India theme park on private land at Pernem. The company intends to establish a theme park using miniature models of historical monuments, while also showcasing folk dances, festivals, spices, and cuisine close to Manohar International Airport, Mopa.
A theme park is coming up in the North, and that has also been approved today. It will come up close to Mopa,” said Godinho after the board meeting.

Cabinet moves to dissolve assembly

A day after theassemblyelection results, which gave BJP 20 seats, the statecabinet decided to recommend to the governor todissolvetheassemblyon Monday. The tenure of the current House ends on March 16.

Sawant said, he led a cabinet meeting at the assembly complex in Porvorim. Sawant also thanked the people of the state for giving him the opportunity to serve them over the past three years.

Goa Industrial Development Corporation to create digital land bank afresh, focus on dues

In yet another attempt to bring in transparency and provide online Services to entrepreneurs and industrial units, Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) has decided to create a digital land bank of all industrial estates by October.

Aside from digitization of services and the creation of a digital land bank, GIDC is trying to plug the gaps at every industrial estate. This includes roads, power supply, water supply and other amenities, said Lourenco.
In 2020, the Centres Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade launched the countrys first digital industrial land bank and Goa was among the first seven states to map industrial land as part of the national GIS-enabled land bank system. GIDC officials admit that the project failed and that a fresh attempt will have to be made.

Anmod Ghat route closure affecting exports, GCCI tells Gadkari

Closureof the Goa-Belagavi road via theAnmod Ghathas hamperedexportsand brought containerised exports through Mormugao Port to a standstill, Goa Chamber of Commerce and (GCCI) told Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari.

AGCCIdelegation metGadkariand requested him to open up thisrouteas early as feasible.
GCCI suggested that instead of building a six-lane highway through the Anmod ghat and the protected forest, the Ramnagar-Anmod portion of the highway should be repaired and widened with four lanes. This will increase container volumes and make the movement of containers viable for shipping companies, it said.

It adversely impacts the retail trade by significantly increasing logistic costs. Around 90% of perishable items such as vegetables, fruits, milk, groceries and other food items are brought from Belagavi and surrounding areas to Goa on a daily basis by this road.

Govt bans O2 cylinder export, will be diverted to health services

Health minister Vishwajit Rane on Friday issued directions to the health secretary to initiate measures to ban the export of Oxygen cylinders to other states with immediate effect, in view of the rapid rise inCovidcases. All industrial oxygen requirements will be diverted towards the health Services, Goa Medical College (GMC) and Covid hospitals.

Hospitalisations have increased over the past few days as the state witnesses a steep rise in Covid infections, and on Average, 90-100 patients require hospitalisation daily.

Goa Govt to analyse impact of IT, startup policy

The department of information technology, electronics and communications has moved to identify the number of startups and IT firms operating in the state.

Info Tech Corporation of Goa (ITG) has been asked to appoint an agency that will carry out a study of Goas IT ecosystem and also prepare a research report recommending best practices that can benefit startups and IT companies.

The comprehensive report needs to analyse the effectiveness of the departments policies and schemes, and the impact that Goas startups and IT firms have on the local economy.

The year-long study will also identify the competitive advantages of Goa and list out possible focus sectors that can help the Growth of startups and IT companies.

The Old Goa-based ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (CCARI), Old Goa and the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), North Goa celebrated the event recently wherein the theme for the year 2021 is haltsoilsalinisation, boost Soil productivity.

Emphasising on the theme and the coastal Saline Soils (locally called khazan), he suggested use technological interventions and suitable policies for its sustainable utilisation. Further, he stressed on judicious use of fertilisers based on soil testing and promotion of Organic Farming in the state.

Goa to rename government schools, higher secondaries after freedom fighters

The state has decided to rename government high schools and higher secondary schools with the names of martyrs who struggled for Goa’s Liberation from Portuguese rule.

The directorate ofeducationhas instructed headmasters and principals of all government high schools and higher secondary schools to identify martyrs or freedom fighters in the locality of the school and submit names in less than two weeks. It hopes to complete the exercise before Goa’s Liberation Day next month.

The department has enclosed a blank copy of the resolution that schools can use, as well as a list of martyrs, in the memorandum that it has sent to all schools.
