Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said 26 private colleges in Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) will be brought under the government control in the first phase of provincialisation.Sarma held a meeting with a delegation of All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) and Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS) regarding development of the educational sector in the BTR as per the Bodo Accord.

The Higher Education Department will check the status of the colleges, , qualification of existing faculty, need for fresh recruitment and take appropriate action in this regard, it added.

The Assam government launched a new sustainable tourism policy-2022 in Delhi in consultation with the aiming to create a strategic roadmap to strengthen tourism support segments and its sub-sectors, officials said.

After conducting an “Assam Tourism Road Show” in the national capital, state’s Tourism, Public Health Engineering, Skill development EMPLOYMENT and Entrepreneurship Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah announced the Tourism Policy-2022 to drive Sustainable Development in the state.

A panel discussions, visual presentations, cultural dance performances and B2B interactive sessions inviting entrepreneurs and investors to make the state their Investment destination were also held at a hotel in Delhi. The tourism policy was prepared after extensive consultations with the World Bank and at every stage of its preparation, the view of the stakeholders and Industry experts has been given due weightage

The Assam government on Tuesday constituted a task force’ to keep check on prices of essential food commodities in the state’s largest city Guwahati, an official release said. The decision to form the special panel was taken by Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass after a meeting with various stakeholders, including government officials and representatives of chambers of commerce and wholesalers and retailers of food items and vegetables

The task force has been instructed by the minister to inspect the markets on a daily basis and ensure that prices of essential commodities are kept in check.

The case was registered first under the Illegal Migrant (Determination by the Tribunal) Act in 1999. It was shifted to FT-I of Karimganj in 2007 after the IM(D)T Act was struck down by The Supreme Court in 2005, and was finally transferred to FT-II in 2017. The matter was heard on September 1 this year.

The process of updating the NRC had begun in 2015 and the final list was published on August 31, 2019, with the names of 3.11 crore people. Over 19 lakh applicants were left out of it. The Registrar General of India is yet to notify it.

Officials here said Assam is the first state in the country to do so. The new law has been formulated on the basis ofa Model Tenancy Actwhich was approved by theUnion Cabineton June 2 this year for adoption across all states andUnion Territories.

The bill was introduced in the assembly on August 9 and was passed. The earlierAssam Urban Areas Rent Control Act, 1972, stands repealed.

The Act will provide a speedy adjudication mechanism for resolution of disputes between landlords and tenants through the establishment of a rent authority, a rent court and rent appellate at the district level.
The Act also specifies the duties and obligations of landlords and tenants regarding maintenance and upkeep of premises.

The cabinet also proposed increase in reservation for six communities of OBC/MOBC category (Non Creamy Layer) from 27 to 30 (Brahmaputra Valley 22 seats and Barak Valley 8 seats), which include reservation of one seat in BDS course for each of the six communities Moran, Matak, Tai Ahom, Chutia and Koch Rajbongshi.

The cabinet approved discontinuation of sale of physical non-judicial stamps from July 1 to make 100% use of digital stamping. But physical stamps purchased before June 30 by vendors andcommonpeople for legitimate transactions will be allowed to be used till September 30.

The recent guidelines on Operationalization ofCovid Care Servicesfor Children & Adolescents from the Union Government mentioned that as intermittent surges are expected, a combined effort from the private and public sector is needed to handle rising cases after the easing of the lockdown, school re-opening or as the third wave sets in over the next three to four months.

A target of achieving 1,000Paediatric Intensive Care Units(PICU) has been set in Assam, out of which the minimum goal is 10 in each district. Though children are the most vulnerable in the third wave, villages are also on the radar as they may turn into super-spreaders. State capital Guwahati is no more the biggest concern for virus infection as the focus has shifted to the districts with vast areas under gram panchayats.

TheCoviddrug DRDO 2-DG will not be used inAssamon a mass scale but only on an experimental basis. The state is awaiting the first consignment of 1,000 packets of the medicine for emergency use.

Without major trials, it is seen as experimental medicine but Health officials are optimistic that the 2-DG drug can turn into a stroke of luck for states such as Assam, where decreasing Oxygen level has raised the daily Covid death numbers. With the enhancement of the testing rate, the number of new cases has become stable, and the positivity rate has fallen below 6%. However, there has been no respite from the deaths, which continue to hover between 80-90 per day.

There is an urgent need to make the upcoming generations realise the importance of being rooted to their cultural heritage and identity, the chief minister said after the ceremonial distribution of financial grants to Celebration Committees.

The Chief Minister distributed one-time financial assistance of Rs 1.5 lakh each to a total of 2,114 Bihu celebration committees from across the state, an initiative launched last year by the Cultural Affairs Department of the Assam government.

Bihu is a representation of the rich cultural heritage of the Assamese community and the initiative was aimed at ensuring that the festival is celebrated in a manner befitting its significance in the states cultural sphere.
