Assamagriculture ministerAtul launched theBodoland Pig MissioninKokrajharto turn the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) into a Piggery hub.
The initiative aims to transform the traditional means of livelihood of thousands of households into a sustainable economic activity.
A target of producing 1-lakh kg pork per day has been set under the mission, which will directly involve 30,000 households in breeding/rearing activities.
Pig-breeding facilities, supply of quality feed at competitive prices, veterinary Services, skill enhancement and registration of farmers, Livestock identification and Insurance facility, value chain development and market linkage will be provided under the mission across the BTR.
Pork accounts for 38.5 per cent of total meat consumption in Assam. It is an important Source Of Income for more than 10 lakh households and 2,500 commercial entrepreneurs in the state.
It is estimated that 1,94,000 tonnes of pork are sold in Assam annually, while the value of the pork market is Rs 582 crore, as per the State Government data.
