Assam bid to reduce infant and maternal mortality rates

The Health department on Thursday launchedSwasthya Sewa Abhiyan(SSA)-2 to improve the states maternal mortality rate (MMR) and infant mortality rate (IMR).

The SSA-2 aims to provide mother and child care through specialist doctors from remotest villages to the city. Mapping of pregnant Women is being done under the scheme with the help of ASHA workers. Health camps

will be held in multiple locations in each of the 34 districts till the end of October.

Assams MMR has improved to 205 per one lakh live births but remained one of the highest in the country, while the IMR has come down below 40 per 1,000 live births this year. However, the state is still lagging behind the states offering advanced healthcare in the country.
