Action Plan: Introduction of Cheetah In India

The Union Government announced an action plan for adopting Cheetah in India on 5 January.

Highlights:

During the 19th meeting of the , the Environment ministry issued the “Action Plan for Adoption of Cheetah in India.”

In India, 50 cheetahs would be introduced over the next five years as part of the action plan.

Cheetahs will be transported from South Africa or Namibia in groups of 12 to 14.

A satellite-GPS-very high-frequency radio collar will be put to each of the cheetahs.Cheetahs will be transported internationally by either a passenger airplane or a chartered flight.

They will be relocated to Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno Palpur National Park (KNP).

According to the strategy, the Union government, the Ministry of Environment, and the Cheetah Task Force will establish a formal structure for engaging with Namibian and/or South African administrations.
